Photoshoot Andrei Bratu

Last Friday I had a great photoshoot in Zurich (CH) with actor and improv theatre maker Andrei Bratu from Improteca! I was impressed with his body language and Andrei’s ability to change his facial expressions. I was also impressed with all his work for ASK, All Special Kids

Photoshoot Friederike

I had a lot of fun doing a photoshoot with Friederike Sommer two weeks ago! Friederike is a Coach, Mentor, Leadership & Team Developer ( We took a number formal, as well as informal pictures. We also planned to take some shots outside, but the rain was horrendous. How happy I was that I had my Tamron 35 1.8 lens with me – the only lens I have for my Nikon D750 which claims to be weatherproof!

A chance encounter with Harold A. Cueva Vasquez

The sunny side of the street

Because I need to do a couple of video projects in 4k, I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix G7. I find the camera excellent for videos, but until today I did not have any opportunities to use it for photography. However, since the sun was shining this afternoon in the Hague, I took the opportunity to take it for a stroll.

Ahmed &- Friend Kleinste Winkeltje-1The first picture I took was from Ahmed and his friend, who were sitting in front of Ahmed’s store enjoying the sun. Ahmed runs ‘Het kleinste winkeltje’ (‘The smallest shop’) in the center of the Hague. According to Vogue, ‘Het kleinste winkeltje’ is one of the best fast food shops in Holland, the best fries around – I agree!

Thomas Poststamp Auction-1Next, I encountered Thomas, who works for an auction house specialized in stamps. Unfortunately, he destroyed all my illusions about the value of some of my post stamps. I happen to have a stack of German post stamps from the Interbellum, when Germany was hit with hyper-inflation, but according to Thomas they were not very valuable. I guess that makes sense: they were also not very valuable when they were printed.

Insta Bookseller-1

‘It is too cold to haggle’. This friendly bookseller on the Plein in The Hague sold me a book my wife had been searching for a long time: ‘Verzamelde gedichten’ (‘Collected poems’) by the Dutch poet J. Slauerhoff. He also had an original edition of a photo book by Ed van der Elsken.  Check him out on the second-hand book market,  every Thursday at the Plein in The Hague.

Hans Coffee - Sigaar - Apple-1Finally, I met Hans. Hans struck me as a life artist: enjoying the sun with an Apple laptop on his knees, a cup of coffee and a nice cigar.

HOS Joshua-1

‘I make a lot of mistakes, but you only live once’  Joshua ( told me when I asked him about the text on his t-shirt, which read ‘I am not perfect but I am limited edition’. He told me his sister worked in a camera store. When he told me which one, I told him this was the best camera store in Switzerland and that I bought a lot of lenses there.

Inspired by the fantastic Human From New-York project by Brandon Stanton, I plan to publish a series of posts based on this format on

A chance encounter with Pirmin Huber

I love traveling by train in Switzerland. Not only is it fast, reliable and convenient; it also provides the opportunity for chance encounters.

Yesterday I met Pirmin Huber on a train to Zurich. Pirmin is a fantastic (bass) musician and composer. His music is a wonderful eclectic combination of jazz and folk music. At times, Pirmin’s music reminds me of Wolfert Brederode and Jan Garbarek. After he generously allowed me to take a few pictures of him, we had a nice chat about his music and his upcoming gigs.

Check him out on! I am looking forward to attending one of his concerts soon.

Cool Steve

Last week I was shooting a video for ASK, which stands for ‘All Special Kids’. It is a charity organization that does excellent work. ASK provides resources for parents, schools and specialists, in order to help them to support children with learning differences and special educational needs in Switzerland.

Whilst working on the video I had the opportunity to take take a couple of pictures of Steve, the great guy who was leading the camp.

Improv photoshoot of three friends in the Hague

When I was taking pictures in the centre of the Hague, I got talking to a guy about the Olympus OMD EM10 (mark I) camera I was using. He had two friends with him and together we decided to do an improv photoshoot.

A photo shoot with René Bom, the night mayor of The Hague

Today I had the pleasure to meet René Bom. René is colourful person AKA the ‘night mayor’ of The Hague and AKA ‘de Haagse Bom’ (the bomb of the Hague). Being born and raised in the Hague, I was honoured to meet this dignitary and to do a photo shoot with him.

A couple of interesting details about René’s outfit for readers who did not have the privilege to  be born the Hague:

  • Green is one of the prominent colours of the escutcheon of the city of the Hague (the other is yellow)
  • The stork in the letter O on René’s shirt refers to the stork in the escutcheon of the city of the Hague – the same stork can be seen on one of the rings René is wearing
  • The number 070 on René’s shirt refers to the telephone digits identifying the city of the Hague

Photoshoot Opera Singer Operahaus Zurich

Early July I did a photoshoot with a very talented opera singer in the neighbourhood of the Operahaus in Zurich. The weather was with us and showed Zurich (and the singer) at their best.
