The Hague Public Library at the Spui has a great tradition of organizing lunch concerts. On April 20, 2017, I had the pleasure to attend a concert of ‘The Küffner Gals’. The Küffner Gals are Maryse Legault and Adrianna van Leeuwen, two extremely talented Canadian clarinet players who have chosen to play on classical clarinets.
Playing a classical clarinet poses a number of challenges, the most important one being that the fingering system is completely different from modern (Reform Boehm) clarinets.
The program consisted of works by Joseph Küffner, Francois Devienne, Ignaz Pleyel and Amand Vanderhagen. It was a wonderful concert, and it was great to see that both the players, as well as the public, had a great time.
