StreetKidsDirect King’s Day Scheveningen

In Holland we celebrate King’s Day on the King’s birthday, each year on April 27. This entails a lot of festivities, and most famously, everyone is free to sell items on so-called ‘vrijmarkten’ (flea markets). Dutch people are always described as Merchants and Vicars, but on King’s Day, the first category clearly takes the lead! Even the few Dutch republicans tend to be become orange-clad royalists.

Since 2016, our family has been active on the Vrijmarkt in Scheveningen to raise money for StreetKidsDirect, an organisation which provides practical and essential support for street kids in Guatemala and Honduras. Today, we sold books, dvd’s, puzzles, pans, bags, cookies, a coffee machine, drones and a lot of other stuff. We are extremely grateful to all people who donated articles to us for sale!

All in all, we raised more than €250 in 3 hours time. We would like to thank our customers, a few of whom you can see in the pictures below.

The incredibly brave lady in the wheelchair is photographer Karen Vlieger.  She only has a couple of weeks left to live and decided to go and enjoy every minute of it. You can find her story here. She had incredibly sweet and kind companions who are accompanying her every step of the way.
