A chance encounter with the DVZO at Zurich HB

Two weeks ago I was on my way back from a photoshoot, when I saw a steam train at the Central Station Zurich. It turned out to be a train from the DVZO, om operation run by a group of enthusiasts in their spare time.

After taking a couple of pictures of the train and the volunteers, I met a couple of other (cool looking) people I did some improve shooting with. All in all a great end of a busy shooting day!

A super trio is born!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a concert of Trio Lusinea. Trio Lusinea is an unusual combination of three instruments: a bassoon, a flute and a harp. The trio consists of three friends and world-class musicians: Valeria Curti (Bassoon), Isabel Goller (Harp) and Annina Rusch (Flute). In the cozy environment of Atelier 17A in Zurich, they played works of Ravel,Yun, Glinka, Bozza and Jolivet.

It was a fantastic event and if their performance made one thing clear it was this: a new super trio is born.

Thanks, Valeria, Isabel, and Annina. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing you again soon!

Joshua

HOS Joshua-1

‘I make a lot of mistakes, but you only live once’  Joshua (@joshhamster.ch) told me when I asked him about the text on his t-shirt, which read ‘I am not perfect but I am limited edition’. He told me his sister worked in a camera store. When he told me which one, I told him this was the best camera store in Switzerland and that I bought a lot of lenses there.

Inspired by the fantastic Human From New-York project by Brandon Stanton, I plan to publish a series of posts based on this format on www.humansofswitzerland.com.

#WeRemember – International Holocaust Memorial Day

Several organizations in the US and Europe support the World Jewish Congress (WJC) in their global campaign to encourage people to speak out on social media and raise awareness about the Holocaust. This campaign asks people to hold up a sign with the words “We Remember,” and to post it on social media with the hashtag #WeRemember.

One of these organizations supporting this initiative is Christen an der Seite Israels Schweiz. Today, Philip van den Berg, President of Christen an der Seite Israels Schweiz, organized a very special remembrance event with Pf. Cornelis Kant (Theologian and Director ‘Christians for Israel International) and Holocaust survivors Shlomo Graber and Carl J. Flesh in Zurich.

During this event, I took photos of people who supported the #WeRemember campaign. Their pictures were shared on social media and can also be found below.

Russian Orthodox Epiphany Celebration Lake Zurich

Last Saturday, January 6, I was party to a very special event at Lake Zurich. The Russian Orthodox church in Zurich was celebrating Epiphany. Epiphany marks two events in the life of Jesus Christ: the visit of the Magi to Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem, and the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

Inspired by this event, members of the Russian Orthodox church traditionally celebrate this by submersion into lakes or rivers blessed by Orthodox priests. Last Saturday members of the Russian Orthodox congregation in Zurich decided to use Lake Zurich for this purpose.

It was a beautiful service; even though I am a convinced protestant, I felt completely included.

Christmas Lighting Bahnhofstrasse Zurich

The Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (Switzerland) is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. Every year iconic lighting is installed for the Christmas period. Here are some pictures I took when it was raining, to capture the reflection of the lights on the wet streets. Again I was very grateful that my Nikon D750 and Tamron 35 1.8 lens are weatherproof…christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-2christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-4christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-6christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-8

Photoshoot Opera Singer Operahaus Zurich

Early July I did a photoshoot with a very talented opera singer in the neighbourhood of the Operahaus in Zurich. The weather was with us and showed Zurich (and the singer) at their best.
