I have always associated organ music with Feike Asma. Asma played the organ in the same vein as Jimi Hendrix played the guitar. Both Asma (for example, in his performance of J.S. Bach’s Toccata) and Hendrix (e.g., “Voodoo Child”) made serious use of—or perhaps “suffered” from—distortion.

That is why I love the music of Gerda Dillmann, an organist based in Thalwil, Switzerland: she works with the instrument rather than against it. To raise money for the restoration of the Haas organ at the Reformed Church in Thalwil, she plays song requests.

Last Sunday, she pulled off the impossible: she played “21st Century Schizoid Man” by King Crimson on the Kuhn organ of the Reformed Church.

Fortunately, I had a camera with me: my Olympus OMD EM1-II with the Olympus 14-150 mm lens, and Gerda was kind enough to let me make and publish a recording.

I did not have an external mic with me and had to set up the camera in literally five seconds, but I hope it gives an impression of this unique performance

Ich habe Orgelmusik schon immer mit Feike Asma assoziiert. Asma spielte die Orgel auf die gleiche Weise, wie Jimi Hendrix Gitarre spielte. Sowohl Asma (zum Beispiel bei seiner Interpretation von J.S. Bachs Toccata) als auch Hendrix (z. B. “Voodoo Child”) setzten Verzerrung intensiv ein – oder “litten” vielleicht darunter.

Deshalb liebe ich die Musik von Gerda Dillmann, einer Organistin aus Thalwil (Schweiz): Sie arbeitet mit dem Instrument und nicht gegen es. Um Geld für die Restaurierung der Haas-Orgel der Reformierten Kirche in Thalwil zu sammeln, spielt sie Lieder auf Wunsch.

Letzten Sonntag hat sie das Unmögliche geschafft: Sie spielte “21st Century Schizoid Man” von King Crimson auf der Kuhn-Orgel der Reformierten Kirche.

Glücklicherweise hatte ich eine Kamera dabei: meine Olympus OMD EM1-II mit dem Olympus 14-150 mm Objektiv, und Gerda war so freundlich, mir zu erlauben, eine Aufnahme zu machen und zu veröffentlichen.

Ich hatte kein externes Mikrofon dabei und musste die Kamera in buchstäblich fünf Sekunden aufstellen, aber ich hoffe, es vermittelt einen Eindruck von dieser einzigartigen Darbietung!
