Get on Board with the Gospelchor Thalwil

Last Sunday the Gospelchor Thalwil, conducted by Felix Bachmann, delivered a fantastic performance of their ‘Get On Board’ program in the Reformed Church of Thalwil. They gave the audience a wonderful evening, with no less than 18 gospel songs (excluding the encores!).

Thank you Gospelchor Thalwil and the Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Thalwil for giving us such a wonderful evening.

If you missed it, there is another opportunity to attend “Get on Board” on Sunday February 3, 2019 in Altendorf/SZ, in the Pfarrkirche St. Michael, at 17:00hrs.

#WeRemember – International Holocaust Memorial Day

Several organizations in the US and Europe support the World Jewish Congress (WJC) in their global campaign to encourage people to speak out on social media and raise awareness about the Holocaust. This campaign asks people to hold up a sign with the words “We Remember,” and to post it on social media with the hashtag #WeRemember.

One of these organizations supporting this initiative is Christen an der Seite Israels Schweiz. Today, Philip van den Berg, President of Christen an der Seite Israels Schweiz, organized a very special remembrance event with Pf. Cornelis Kant (Theologian and Director ‘Christians for Israel International) and Holocaust survivors Shlomo Graber and Carl J. Flesh in Zurich.

During this event, I took photos of people who supported the #WeRemember campaign. Their pictures were shared on social media and can also be found below.

Russian Orthodox Epiphany Celebration Lake Zurich

Last Saturday, January 6, I was party to a very special event at Lake Zurich. The Russian Orthodox church in Zurich was celebrating Epiphany. Epiphany marks two events in the life of Jesus Christ: the visit of the Magi to Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem, and the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.

Inspired by this event, members of the Russian Orthodox church traditionally celebrate this by submersion into lakes or rivers blessed by Orthodox priests. Last Saturday members of the Russian Orthodox congregation in Zurich decided to use Lake Zurich for this purpose.

It was a beautiful service; even though I am a convinced protestant, I felt completely included.

Tribute to Martin Luther King in Thalwil (CH)

Today it is Martin Luther King Day. Yesterday evening I had the pleasure to attend ‘I have a dream – Hommage an Martin Luther King’ in the Kirchgemeindehaus Thalwil. A beautiful performance by Vera Bauer (Text & Design), Christina Jaccard (Vocals), Dave Ruosch (Piano) and Steve Grant (Drums). The performers really managed to bring Martin Luther King, his family and the era of the civil rights movements, to life.

Thank you Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Thalwil and Jazzclub Thalwil for this wonderful co-production!

A chance encounter with Pirmin Huber

I love traveling by train in Switzerland. Not only is it fast, reliable and convenient; it also provides the opportunity for chance encounters.

Yesterday I met Pirmin Huber on a train to Zurich. Pirmin is a fantastic (bass) musician and composer. His music is a wonderful eclectic combination of jazz and folk music. At times, Pirmin’s music reminds me of Wolfert Brederode and Jan Garbarek. After he generously allowed me to take a few pictures of him, we had a nice chat about his music and his upcoming gigs.

Check him out on pirminhuber.com! I am looking forward to attending one of his concerts soon.

Christmas Lighting Bahnhofstrasse Zurich

The Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (Switzerland) is one of the most expensive shopping streets in the world. Every year iconic lighting is installed for the Christmas period. Here are some pictures I took when it was raining, to capture the reflection of the lights on the wet streets. Again I was very grateful that my Nikon D750 and Tamron 35 1.8 lens are weatherproof…christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-2christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-4christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-6christmas lights bahnhofstrasse-8
